EVDOUSIN

Evdousin is a ritual act involving musicians, a chorus, theatre and poetry from Ancient Greece (Alkeos, Sapphos etc). The music, based on the Ancient Greek modes and traditions form the Black Sea and the Karpathos island, is performed by the Evdousin Ensemble.

The chorus sings, dances and interprets poetry (declamation), music (melody) and rhythm (dance) as it would have in an Ancient Greek tragedy. The composition begins with a Hymn to Apollo by Orpheus, reaches its climax with the Pyrrhic Dances, and ends with a text from Euripides.

The cast includes up to 15 people from all over Europe – musicians and a female chorus. The show was composed and is directed by the lyre player Pantelis Pavlidis, who participated in the L’Ham de Foc’s last CD “Cor de Porc”, and in the music that Efrén composed for the play “Tirant i Carmesina” by the theatre company Visitants.
Pantelis Pavlidis was born in Serres, in the north of Greece in 1959. He was introduced to the world of the Pontic Lyre by his grandfather, who was from the region of Pontus. This is the Greek name for the area of the Black Sea from which millions of Hellenes were expelled by the Turks in the 20th Century, coming to rest in the Greece we know today.
Pantelis, at 30, arrived on Karpathos and was immediately caught up by the traditional music there, especially the modality of the lyre that is native to the region. He joined the local music scene, taking part in several festivals dedicated to the lyre. He has participated in various groups as a composer, collaborator, singer or lyre player: Armos Ensemble, Mesogii, L’Ham de Foc, Panas
