THE ANGELS OF THE VALENCIA'S CATHEDRAL

Efrén took part as a musical consultant in this project by Capella de Ministrers, a Valencian group dedicated to Early Music and directed by Carles Magraner (viola da gamba), with whom Efrén continues to collaborate today.

It was a fascinating project reconstructing 12 instruments which, on the 22nd June 2004 were discovered in frescos painted on the dome of Valencia’s cathedral. The painting dated from the 13th Century and had remained hidden since the 17th Century. In very excellent repair, the paintings depict 12 large angels strumming instruments from the period and earlier. They include an Aulos, a Hammer Psaltery, and a Bombarda or Organetto. A specialist musician was chosen to work on the construction of each instrument. He or she in turn chose a luthier to physically create the piece. The aim was to make a recoding of period music with the completed instruments.

Efrén’s instrument was the lute and he worked with excellent Greek luthier, Dimitris Rapakusios.

Other musicians who worked on the project include Carles Magraner himself (bowed viola), David Antich (Aulos), Begoña Olavide (zither) and Manuel Vilas (harp). Participating luthiers include Carlos Paniagua (zither), Norbert Eckermann (tambourine), Lourdes Uncilla (viola da mano) and John Hanchet (shawn).
